Start with the production process, not the software screen
A manufacturing ERP project should begin with products, bills of materials, routings, work centers, material planning, quality controls, maintenance, traceability and costing. Odoo modules are then selected and configured against the approved process.
Core scope areas
- Master data: products, units of measure, bills of materials, operations and work centers.
- Planning: manufacturing orders, replenishment rules, capacity and scheduling assumptions.
- Execution: work orders, shop-floor instructions, consumption, output and scrap.
- Inventory and traceability: locations, lots, serial numbers, expiry rules and barcode processes.
- Quality and maintenance: control points, alerts, corrective actions and preventive maintenance.
- Costing and reporting: material, labor and overhead assumptions, variance analysis and management KPIs.
Important design decisions
Confirm the Odoo edition and hosting model, localization needs, device compatibility, machine interfaces, security roles, data retention, backup and integration ownership. Odoo Online does not support arbitrary server-side custom modules; Odoo.sh or on-premise may be needed when justified.
Delivery controls
- Approve scope, process owners and success metrics.
- Clean and validate master data.
- Prototype high-risk workflows and integrations.
- Configure standard Odoo before approving custom development.
- Run user acceptance testing with traceable scenarios.
- Reconcile opening inventory and costing before cutover.
- Define go-live support, rollback criteria and SLA.
Measuring value responsibly
Use customer-owned baseline data for schedule adherence, cycle time, inventory accuracy, stockouts, scrap, rework, traceability and reporting time. Targets must be agreed after discovery; fixed percentage improvements are not guaranteed.
